Helga [Hel-ga] The female first name Helga originates from the Nordic. It derives from the word "hailac", which means "healthy", or from "helig", which means "holy".

Hel [from ahd. helan, nhd. hehlen - 'to conceal' but also 'the salvager, the hidden one']. Hel is the goddess of death and the underworld. In the beginning, hel was mainly used to refer to the place of the dark realm of the dead inside the earth. The North Germanic people soon developed the idea that this realm was ruled by a ruler who took the name of the place. Thus 'Hel' became a personal name and this goddess became the ruler of those dead who had passed away after an active, inglorious life.
